Assessment and Prioritization Langdale Ferry Terminal to Sechelt Village In 2022, TraC hired a professional transportation planner, Gavin Davidson of GJD Planning, to examine the Highway 101 corridor between the Langdale Ferry Terminal and Sechelt Village, determine the feasibility of building multi-use active transportation infrastructure along the route in the highway right-of-way, recommend a type of infrastructure suitable for each section of right-of-way based on existing infrastructure and land use patterns, and provide a high level cost estimate for construction. To do this, GJD Planning mapped the width of the Highway 101 right-of-way and existing roadway, and the location of driveways, property parcel boundaries, gas and water lines, street lights, power poles and bus stops. This information allowed us to identify conflict points and to see how much space was available between the edge of the existing highway and the boundary of the existing right-of-way at each location along the route -- space that could be used to accommodate new active transportation infrastructure. GJD Planning then reviewed the density and land use patterns in each area in order to identify and recommend a type of infrastructure (e.g., protected uni-directional bike lane, separated bi-directional multi-use path, etc) suitable for each area. This information was used to divide the route into 22 segments (plus 3 segments suggested as a possible alternative route). Segments were grouped into bundles that would effectively connect destinations. For example, the segments identified as segments 5-7 were grouped together in order to connect (what was then) the last controlled crossing in upper Gibsons (at Pratt Road) to the turn-off to Roberts Creek at Lower Road. The final step was to prioritize sections of the route for development. To do this, GJD Planning developed a multiple accounts evaluation that considered factors such as projected demand, safety and connectivity, community support, and cost of construction. The Gibsons – Roberts Creek Connector was identified as the top priority section for development based on this evaluation.
